Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii)
Thanksgiving? Christmas? Easter? The difference can be seen in the leaf shape! This festive houseplant has dark-green flattened stems. They are oval in shape with pointed claw-like serrations on both sides, where as the Christmas cactus has a softer scalloped edge. They buds form at the end of the stems and the bloom is tube-shaped with a “double flower” appearance that varies in color. These plants originate in the jungle so they don’t mind humidity, but prefer their soil to dry out in between watering.
>>FUN FACT Flowering is triggered by shorter days and cooler nights! They want bright daylight followed by 12-14 hrs of darkness. Lamps or interior lights can affect them so if kept inside, try putting them outdoors starting in October.
